There's a trend in marketing to "put your main value prop in the headline." So folks will make their H1 something like: "Eliminate back-and-forth haggling." ☝️ but that headline doesn't tell somebody who's visiting your site for the first time *what your product is*.

I’m not convinced that startups can solve for the “customers signing up and not using the product” problem. The motivation to use a product seems completely based on the forces in someone’s life. That “pull” has to be consistent/strong enough to translate into regular usage.

I know how it feels to be early.

But this NFT stuff doesn't feel the same to me.
@hnshah @TylerMKing @tylertringas @nbashaw @m1guelpf Again, I *was* early:

- to the shareware scene
- to the web and HTML

I know how it feels to be early.

I'm not discounting the skills, connections, experience, resources, creativity, insights, and effort it takes to be successful. Those are "necessary, but not sufficient." You need strong, underlying customer demand (like water flowing down a river) to make a business work.

There’s probably not much you can do inside your product to motivate people to use it more. People have to feel that pull themselves; they’re being motivated by a consistent problem or desire in their lives.

The challenge (for SaaS) is that the underlying desire has to be strong enough to consistently overcome inertia (month after month). Some interesting nuance: With web hosting, you generally only need to convince them once. Once the site is up, they'll pay for a long time.

@JackEllis There’s a few significant differences, the largest being our current legal concept of ownership. Owning a comic book (and transferring ownership of a comic book) is already governed by law. NFTs are like me printing out a “certificate of ownership” for a comic you don’t own.

If customers really want something, they'll go to great lengths to get it. Yes, you have to build a solid product. (This is where execution really matters) But executing on product is fruitless if there aren't motivated consumers already looking for it.

@tylertringas Yes! That's pretty good. The only problem is that there's a sliding scale of what "want" means. I might want to get fit, but not have the motivation to go to the gym. I might want a good DSLR (and buy it!) but I just end up using my iPhone because it's more practical.

@jonathanstark Investing effort in trying to motivate unmotivated customers to use your product is probably not worth it (inside the product or outside the product). At least, I’ve never seen it work in self-serve SaaS. I can probably nudge people; but I can’t provide the underlying pull.

@brhea Yes! Reducing friction can help improve activation. I’m not sure it can drive ongoing usage though? I’m sure it helps, but the underlying push/pull seems to be mostly outside a product’s control.

@GetTheAudience @kentcdodds @zachrip_ @TransistorFM But aren’t you fiddling with system volume no matter what? Apps, podcasts, music, all have variable volume already; how does having a slider in an individual player help? Don’t you still need to to adjust system volume despite individual player settings?

@kentcdodds @zachrip_ @TransistorFM Curious about this one: don’t most folks just use the volume keys on their keyboard?

@pascallaliberte I think there's a fundamental misunderstanding of consumer behavior here. If the alternative is Spotify freemium; why would someone switch?

@pascallaliberte I think I'm skeptical because I spend a lot of time observing how people buy and consume goods/services. I haven't observed those kinds of interactions. What I do observe: <Loud party> "Hand me your phone so I can search for a song." "Don't use Siri, I'll just type it in."
