@firstadopter I think “good ideas” are hard to come by. The idea of paying to “unlock tweets” seems DOA to me. Folks are just in a different mind-space here than they are on Patreon. There’s not a strong “pull” for someone to want to see what’s behind the curtain of an exclusive tweet.

@jonathanstark Investing effort in trying to motivate unmotivated customers to use your product is probably not worth it (inside the product or outside the product). At least, I’ve never seen it work in self-serve SaaS. I can probably nudge people; but I can’t provide the underlying pull.

The challenge (for SaaS) is that the underlying desire has to be strong enough to consistently overcome inertia (month after month). Some interesting nuance: With web hosting, you generally only need to convince them once. Once the site is up, they'll pay for a long time.

@RickieTicklez Just felt like: "I need it for these two things. It's already going to save me way more than $119.40 in time saved. I might need it for a few other things? Might as well just pay for premium." (Mostly, $119.40 felt like a no-brainer)

I imagine, for Canva, that's a pretty regular cycle: People need it for a project; subscribe. Project ends; they let their subscription expire. Need it for another project; re-subscribe. They can create more templates that match more use-cases, but they can't create motivation.

Example: I signed up for Canva in 2015, and used it a ton. But in the last few years, I've let my usage slip. They sent lots of prompts to reengage me, but none "moved me" to use it. Last week, I had a project that needed it. Instant motivation! I paid $119.40 to reactivate.

@mydigitalself @SliteHQ But what about retention? In my experience, getting folks to "activate" (sign up for a trial) isn't super hard. But motivating them to actually record a podcast episode, edit it, and upload it? That's hard. 😄 twitter.com/mijustin/statu…

@tylertringas Yes! That's pretty good. The only problem is that there's a sliding scale of what "want" means. I might want to get fit, but not have the motivation to go to the gym. I might want a good DSLR (and buy it!) but I just end up using my iPhone because it's more practical.

Motivated people will learn incredibly complicated/unfriendly software (VIM, Photoshop, Pro Tools). I’m not saying we shouldn’t be trying to make user-friendly software! I’m just saying that it’s incredibly difficult for us, as software makers, to provide/create motivation.

There’s probably not much you can do inside your product to motivate people to use it more. People have to feel that pull themselves; they’re being motivated by a consistent problem or desire in their lives.

I’m not convinced that startups can solve for the “customers signing up and not using the product” problem. The motivation to use a product seems completely based on the forces in someone’s life. That “pull” has to be consistent/strong enough to translate into regular usage.

@staydecent Yup. But so far the FLCC hasn’t proven that they’re doing good science. It’s not just government approval they’re lacking, they haven’t been published in Frontier (or any other journal from what I can see). the-scientist.com/news-opinion/f… pic.twitter.com/TG5U1rZaba

What’s great about science is that every claim has to be evaluated and independently replicated, multiple times. Science doesn’t care about the “cult of the individual.” It doesn’t matter how well-known/popular an expert is. You can’t make a claim based on reputation alone.

Growth tactics for SaaS really depend on your product category. Overall, SEO has been a consistently good channel. In our category (as with most web hosting) affiliates work well. Participating in communities has been helpful too (for me: Reddit, @megamaker, Twitter, Discord)

@louisnicholls_ @TylerMKing In one way, you *want* to focus on survivorship bias when studying SaaS. You're looking for the characteristics of the SaaS that "made it." If we include "all founders who start a company" the data isn't going to be helpful either (so many reasons for a business not to work)

@dannoblaster Even Trump used "two weeks to slow the spread of Covid19."

cnn.com/2020/03/28/pol…

Nobody said it was going to be "2 weeks to stop covid19 completely."

That's ridiculous. That's not how viruses work. They evolve (especially when they're given the chance to spread). pic.twitter.com/7Iuhqik781

@jhong @hnshah @SamuelHulick @DezBryant This is kind of my point: Given how disruptive this tech can be for society (and, the ecological environment), shouldn’t we be more mindful about it? Should we carefully consider the pillars we’re putting in place now, given that they’ll be the foundation for the future?

@ianlandsman In the midst of the climate crisis, every emerging tech needs to be evaluated. We need a way of extrapolating what the future ecological costs are going to be. Our mistake, in the past, was we didn’t have enough scrutiny around externalities and ecological costs.

@gilesvangruisen @earthlingworks Broadly that feels right. But there are iterative/cumulative effects of work & luck that make the story a lot more interesting. Even "making the right choice" is a mixture of luck, skill, experience, knowledge, etc. Every new variable introduces a myriad of possible outcomes.

@earthlingworks Success seems multifaceted, cumulative; making it difficult to describe in a linear way. For example, "knowledge" is important. But sometimes you seek the wrong knowledge. Sometimes knowledge finds you. Knowledge often compounds; but an external var can disrupt what you know.

Also: do decentralized apps work, at scale, in practice? Example: Twitter already has a decentralized competitor (Mastodon) that hasn't gained traction. Is there something about traditional apps/biz models that make them succeed despite open-source/decentralized alternatives?

I used to question everything. Religion, in particular, gave me false-confidence. I believed I could be an expert on everything. It was egotism; an "exaggerated opinion of my own importance." It took time, but through gradual correction, I realized how wrong my beliefs were.

"Questioning everything" is like throwing away all that humans have learned and gained. 🌍 When NASA, astronomers, and pilots assure us the earth is round, it's OK to believe them! Human progress is the result of many iterations; let's not go backwards.

Knowledge is both cumulative and iterative. Humans make progress when we build on the knowledge that has been rigorously vetted in the past. It's *good* to trust the cumulative (vetted) knowledge of professional communities in their disciplines: doctors, scientists, plumbers.

@skulegirl Surprisingly, certain sub-reddits had a powerful effect in me questioning my beliefs. It was the questions they posed, and the evidence they provided, that moved me to reconsider my position.

Idolizing individual thinkers, scientists, entrepreneurs, celebrities is a real threat to the progress of knowledge because all individuals are prone to bad thinking. People who have a large cult-like following can distort knowledge, and distract from the scientific process.

@s1037989 The key insight is not "what do I believe, and what do you believe" it's acknowledging that human knowledge is cumulative and iterative. We should all be keen to contribute to the progress of knowledge. (This also means we can stop debating whether the world is flat 😜)

Most of the time, when my thinking was challenged, I didn't like it. Strong emotions emerged; I'd react with passionate arguments. I'm sure many of the people challenging me thought: "This guy is never going to change his mind." But over time, their evidence convinced me.

A crucial paradigm shift: ❌ "I'm a smart individual, who's mostly right, most of the time" ✅ "Knowledge is created, and vetted, collectively" As individuals, we're prone to egotism, bias, logical fallacies, and bad-faith arguments. Antidote: having our thinking challenged.
